Our Story

Born from the Sacred Soils of Ceylon

In the lowlands around Galle, where the Indian Ocean air carries salt and spice, the finest cinnamon on earth has grown for hundreds of years. Amber & Bark (also written as Amber and Bark) was started because of a simple belief: the world deserves to taste cinnamon the way it was always meant to be.

We source only from the red soils of Southern Sri Lanka, the one place where Cinnamomum verum, true Ceylon cinnamon, reaches its full flavour. Read our guide on Ceylon Cinnamon vs Cassia or explore our Sri Lankan Cinnamon Grades Guide.

Amber & Bark is not just a spice brand. We protect a tradition. We carry a flavour that moved empires. And we will never sell anything less than the best.

A Living Legacy

Four Thousand Years of Ceylon Cinnamon

Long before maps were drawn, Ceylon cinnamon was already famous. It moved across oceans, fuelled trade empires and sat in the hands of pharaohs. This is that story.

These images endure. So does the craft.

2000 BCE

Gold to the Pharaohs

Ancient Egyptians treated cinnamon as something sacred. They burned it in temples, used it in burial rituals and offered it to their gods. Trade records point to a distant eastern island as the source. That island was Ceylon. To the ancient world, this was not a spice. It was a treasure.

1st Century CE

Arab Traders & The Silk Routes

Arab traders kept Ceylon cinnamon a secret for centuries. They told buyers wild stories. That the spice came from giant bird nests on unclimbable cliffs. That snakes guarded every tree. These stories kept buyers away and prices high. Across the Mediterranean, cinnamon sold for the weight of silver.

14th Century

The Venetian Spice Fortunes

By the medieval era, Venice controlled almost all of Europe's cinnamon trade. Their wealth was built entirely on Ceylon's shores. The spice was gifted between kings, listed in royal inventories next to gold, and used to settle debts. A pound of real cinnamon was worth more than a skilled worker earned in a month.

1517

Three Empires. One Prize.

The Portuguese arrived on Ceylon's coast and built their first fort in Colombo. Not for land. Not for people. For cinnamon. The Dutch fought them for it. The British ousted the Dutch. For over three hundred years, the greatest colonial prize on this island was not diamonds or gold. It was the inner bark of a slender tree growing in red soil near the southern shore. That tree still grows.

Today

Amber & Bark. Today.

Sri Lanka is still the world's home of true cinnamon. Southern Sri Lanka, where the soil is red and the ocean breeze never stops, grows the finest of all. Amber & Bark carries this forward. Not as something old, but as something alive. The same soil. The same hands. The same care. Always.

The Origin

Where the World's Finest Cinnamon Grows

Southern Sri Lanka is not just a place. It is the only place on earth where true cinnamon grows as it should. The soil here, the sea air, the light — everything works together.

Ocean Air and Warmth

Warm winds from the Indian Ocean, seasonal rains and coastal humidity give the Cinnamomum verum tree exactly what it needs to grow at its best.

Red Laterite Soil

The iron-rich red soils of the Southern Province give our cinnamon a natural mineral depth and sweetness that no other region can copy.

Harvested All Year

Unlike seasonal crops, our cinnamon is harvested throughout the year. Every order ships fresh, peeled and perfectly ripened.

The Process

By Hand.
Every Time.

From a living tree to a finished quill. Done entirely by hand. No machines. No shortcuts.

01

Choosing
the Branch

The master peeler walks the plantation and picks only the branches that are ready. The right age. The right thickness. Nothing less will do.

02

The
Peeling

A special knife removes the outer bark to reveal the thin inner layer beneath. Long strips, no tears allowed. This skill takes years to learn.

03

Rolling
the Quills

Strips are layered and rolled by hand into tight quills, a technique found only in Ceylon. How tightly it rolls determines the grade.

04

Sun
Drying

Quills dry slowly on mats under the coastal sun. The oils deepen. The aroma grows. No machines. No hurry.

05

Grading
& Packing

Each quill is measured and checked by hand. Alba, C4, C5 — every grade has a strict standard. Only what passes that standard leaves our hands.

Heritage

Sri Lanka's Gift to the World

Ceylon cinnamon, known as Cinnamomum verum or true cinnamon, has grown on this island for thousands of years. Egyptian pharaohs prized it. Arab traders carried it across oceans. European powers went to war and built forts here just to hold onto it. In 1517, the Portuguese built their first fort in Colombo for one reason. Cinnamon.

For centuries, Sri Lanka was the world's only source. That has not changed. Today, this island remains the home of real cinnamon. When you choose Amber & Bark, you are not just buying a spice. You are part of a story that helped shape the world.

"In every quill of Ceylon cinnamon lies a story older than nations, wider than oceans, and sweeter than anything the world has known since."

Standards

What We Will Never Compromise

Most cinnamon sold in the world is not real cinnamon. It is cassia, a harder, cheaper bark from a different tree. Amber & Bark exists to fix that. Everything we do is built around one thing: giving you the real thing.

Multiple Premium Grades

C5, C4 and Alba grades from a single certified origin. Every batch is checked against international export standards before it leaves.

Nothing Added

No preservatives, no dyes, no additives. Just cinnamon, exactly as it came from the tree and the hands that peeled it.

Safe for Daily Use

Ceylon cinnamon contains a fraction of the coumarin found in cassia. Ours is safe to use every day, for everyone in your family.

Export Ready

Compliant with EU, US and international food safety rules. Full documentation provided for all wholesale orders.
